Dental Crowns in Montreal
If your tooth is damaged but not lost, a crown can be used to restore its shape, appearance and function. You may need a crown if you have a root canal, a large filling in a tooth or a broken tooth.
What is a Dental Crown?
A crown, also called a cap, is a hollow, artificial tooth used to cover a damaged or decayed tooth. The crown restores the tooth and protects it from further damage. Crowns can also be used to cover a discolored or misshapen tooth. A tooth that has been fixed with a crown looks and works very much like a natural tooth.
Dr. Wisdom offers all kinds of prosthetic work: fixed (Crowns and bridges), removable (partials and dentures) or supported by dental implants. What Problems Can Dental Crowns Fix?
A dental crown can provide an adequate solution to a panoply of dental problems and may be needed in a few different circumstances such as:
- A weak tooth (for instance, from decay) from breaking or holding together parts of a cracked tooth. It can also protect a tooth that has undergone a root canal (which weakens the natural tooth)
- An already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down
- A tooth with a large filling when there isn’t a lot of natural tooth left
- A dental bridge that needs strengthening
- Misshapen or severely discolored teeth (cosmetic modification)
- A dental implant that needs to be covered
The Advantages of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns have many advantages such as :
- Saving a severely damaged tooth (like a cracked tooth or a tooth that has a very large filling)
- Protecting a dead tooth from falling apart (after a root canal treatment for instance)
- They are the best protection for a tooth with a history of tooth decay
- They are a versatile and quick cosmetic treatment (discoloration and mild misalignment)
- They are mostly permanent since they are quite durable
The Dental Crown Procedure
The first appointment involves preparing your tooth and getting a temporary crown. The procedure begins with examining the state of the existing tooth, particularly its roots and the surrounding bone. After this, you will be given an anesthetic around the tooth and gum tissue. Once this is done, it is time to prepare the tooth by properly reshaping it. During this step, there will be a reduction in the biting surface of the tooth. If there is a large area missing due to decay or damage, the tooth will then be reconstructed. The dentist will also choose a color and shape to match your other teeth for them to blend seamlessly. After reshaping your teeth, an impression will be taken to send to the lab to manufacture your custom crown.
During the second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and fit the permanent one. If the crown is adequate and satisfactory, the crown will be permanently cemented on your reconstructed tooth.
Maintaining Your Dental Crown
Maintaining rigorous dental hygiene at home is a must to ensure a long-lasting and strong dental crown. It is also recommended to have regular check-ups and cleaning with your dentist to ensure a good follow-up of your dental crown and check if there is no decay under it.

Dental Crown FAQs
Pricing for a dental crown will vary from clinic to clinic depending mainly on the tooth that requires a crown, its condition, and the material used. At Doctor Wisdom, the cost of a dental crown is $1,300. If your tooth requires reconstruction and a dental post it will cost $450 more.
A dental crown will require two separate visits to the clinic with approximately 3 weeks in between appointments. The first appointment requires about an hour to take the imprints of your tooth and prepare it. As for the following appointment which is to permanently cement your crown, it takes about 30 minutes.
The procedure itself will not be painful as you will be under local anesthesia. You may feel some discomfort in the beginning upon receiving your new crown but after a week or two, you should be fully adjusted to your new dental crown.
A dental crown usually lasts about 10 to 15 years. If the procedure was done correctly and has been well taken care of, it can even last up to 25 to 30 years!
